Implementing inode limits on Isambard-AI Phase 2 Lustre storage
To protect the stability and availability of shared storage for all users we are introducing inode (file count) limits on the Lustre filesystems on Isambard-AI Phase 2.
With immediate affect the following limits apply:
On $SCRATCHDIR (/scratch) the limit is 1,000,000 inodes.
On $PROJECTDIR (/projects) the limit is 50,000,000 inodes.
If current usage of an area exceeds the limits above the new limit will be set to current usage plus 1,000,000 inodes providing some additional headroom.
You can check your current inode usage and limits using the command on our Checking Quotas page.
If you work with large datasets containing many files packaging them as SquashFS archives is an effective way to reduce your inode footprint while keeping your data fully accessible.
Apologies for any disruption and lack of notice. Without immediate intervention we risked significant service disruption affecting everyone on the system. We recognise this is a sudden change and may require some adjustment to your workflows. We are grateful for your understanding. Please raise a support ticket as usual if you have any questions or concerns.
Isambard-AI Phase 1: No Known Issues
There are no known issues that affect the normal running of Isambard-AI Phase 1. Please contact support if you encounter an issue.
Isambard-AI Phase 2: At Risk
Isambard-AI Phase 2 is currently undergoing scheduled maintenance of its cooling distribution units (CDUs). One quarter of the system will be powered down at a time, with one quarter taken offline each morning and afternoon across 21–22 April 2026. The remaining three quarters of the system will continue to operate as normal throughout the maintenance window. Access to the login nodes is unaffected, however job scheduling for long jobs may take longer than usual during this period. See Planned Maintenance for details. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.
Isambard 3: No Known Issues
There are no known issues that affect the normal running of Isambard 3. Please contact support if you encounter an issue.
BlueCrystal 5 Early Access: No Known Issues
There are no known issues that affect the normal running of BlueCrystal 5 Early Access. Please contact support if you encounter an issue.
